Cram-the-Van Food Drive

Cram-the-Van is our way of “walking the walk” instead of just “talking the talk.”  Co-Ops like ours are founded on several different cooperative principles, one being “concern for community.”  What could be more worthy of our concern than hunger?  The government estimates that 15-percent of Americans lack the food they need for good health.  They are hungry and we wanted to help.

So we pasted “Cram-the-Van” signage onto one of our Co-Op vehicles and hit the road.  During the months of September and October our team criss-crossed Western Kansas collecting non-perishable donations for local food banks.  We went to Garden City, Syracuse, Conway Springs, Great Bend, Scott City and so many more.  We attended football games, hung out in grocery store parking lots and celebrated Halloween with you.

As our way of saying “thank you” for your participation, we cooked up countless hotdogs and pulled pork sandwiches for people who stopped by to donate food.  We also held drawings for free hotel stays donated by the Hotel at Waterwalk in Wichita.

Many thanks to partners like Caldwell City Hall and Hired Man Grocery for allowing us to set up donation points to supplement the ones at our own offices.  And most of all, thanks to YOU, our members and the broader community for stepping up to help us walk the walk.

We asked for your help and you answered!  In 2014, we were able to collect 6,615 pounds —that’s several TONS— of food for the hungry!  To put it another way, that's enough to keep a local food bank running for approximately 6 months.  Look for our big red van again next year and remember that food banks need our help all year long.
