Wheatland Electric will award 17 scholarships in 2020 – 13 to high school seniors as part of the Scholarship Program, and 4 to the high school juniors who were awarded Youth Tour and Leadership Camp trips but were unable to attend due to cancellations caused by Covid-19.

Wheatland awards up to 14 scholarships through the Wheatland Scholarship Program annually, allotting one for each of the schools Wheatland serves and one At-Large scholarship for children of members who do not attend one of those schools.  As part of this program, Wheatland has awarded 13 scholarships to outstanding seniors.  Seniors must complete an application that includes an essay on a topic about which that student is passionate.  A committee reviews these applications and makes their selections, which are then announced at Annual Meeting.  Unfortunately, Annual Meeting has been postponed until August 26th, due to the coronavirus pandemic.  The winners of the 2020 Wheatland Scholarship are:

  • Hope Casner – Argonia

  • Carson Linenberger – At-Large

  • Delaney May – Caldwell

  • Audrey Bebermeyer – Chaparral

  • Victoria Kunz – Conway Springs

  • Luke Maneth – Great Bend

  • Kamryn Youmans – Greeley County

  • Gracelynn Rupp – Holcomb

  • Tori Poe – Norwich

  • Madison Shapland – Scott City

  • Rachel Turek – South Haven

  • Alex Moser – Syracuse

  • Johanna Ridder – Wichita County

The Youth Tour and Leadership Camp Trip Winners who received scholarships are:

  • Sadie Schmanke – Conway Springs

  • Leah Bowlby – South Haven

  • Zoe Jerke – Great Bend

  • Ryan Thompson – Syracuse

Congratulations to all of the recipients!

Youth Tour and Leadership Camp candidates are nominated by their schools, and then must go through a selection process which includes a written test, essay on a specific topic, and an interview by committee.  Youth Tour winners spend a week in Washington D.C., touring historic sites and learning about the nation’s history while making life-long friendships.  Leadership Camp winners travel to Glen Eden Springs Resort in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where they join students from Oklahoma, Colorado and Wyoming to learn about the cooperative business model, legislative processes, teamwork and leadership.

Wheatland was disappointed to hear of the cancellation of the Youth Tour and Leadership Camp trips, but realized the safety of all involved is the primary concern.  General Manager Bruce W. Mueller wanted to reward the students’ hard work by offering a scholarship with a portion of the funds designated for the trips.  These students will also be eligible to apply for the Wheatland Scholarship next year when they are seniors.
