BARTON COUNTY–Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. announced today that its Sharing Success Fund, managed by the Scott Community Foundation, has awarded a $1,000 grant to the Central Baptist Church bicycle campground.

The funds will be used toward the purchase and installation of a port-a-potty to meet the needs of overnight campers.

“The park is also used by many local community members,” said Donna Krug who applied for the grant on behalf of the campground.

The purpose of the bicycle campground is to help ensure cross country cyclists have a safe place to tent camp. In addition to the porta-potty, which is being planned by an Eagle Scout candidate, the organizers, which included Central Baptist Church,

Be Well Barton County and the Central Kansas Partnership, have rebuilt picnic tables, installed a shelter and an electric recharge station as well as drilled a pump water well. There is also a kiosk with community information for the cyclists.

“The campground is close to many businesses, which is convenient for the cyclists,” Krug said.

The Scott Community Foundation began formally accepting applications for grants from the Wheatland Electric Sharing Success Fund from community-based organizations on December 1, 2012. Wheatland Electric and CoBank have each contributed $10,000 this year to the fund. The program will continue to run until the funds are exhausted.

Community based organizations interested in receiving funding from the Wheatland Electric Sharing Success Fund can apply online. Questions should be referred to Alli Conine, Director of Member Services & Corporate Communications, at 620-874-4563 or aconine@weci.net.
