Golden Belt Humane Society Receives $1,000 Sharing Success Grant

GREAT BENDWheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (WEC) announced today that the Golden Belt Humane Society has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Sharing Success Fund to be used to help fund their trap-neuter-release (TNR) program.

The Golden Belt Humane Society’s TNR program has been a long time in the making. Funding challenges have prevented the program from achieving the desired impact to the local cat population. Through the TNR program, stray cats are captured, may be tested for feline aids and leukemia, spayed or neutered, ear tipped, and vaccinated for rabies. Healthy cats are then released back into the community. Removing sickly cats from colonies and vetting the healthy ones helps prevent the spread of diseases to the rest of the population and reduces health risks to humans. The program will also help stabilize the area cat population. Healthy cats are needed in the community to help control the rodent population.

The Golden Belt Humane Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to animal welfare, providing temporary housing and care to strays and unwanted pets. They provide proper nutrition, necessary medical care, pet microchipping, adoption, and animal control services. To find more information on their TNR program or how you can help, visit their website or call 620-792-4297.

The Scott Community Foundation began formally accepting applications for grants from the Sharing Success Fund from community-based organizations on December 1, 2012. Since then, the application process has been moved internally and is currently handled directly by WEC. This year, WEC and CoBank have once again each contributed $10,000 to the fund. The program will continue to run until the funds are exhausted. Since 2012, WEC’s Sharing Success Fund has made $145,000 available to community-based organizations and projects across their service territory.

Community based organizations interested in receiving funding from the Sharing Success Fund can apply online. Questions should be referred to Alli Conine, director of member Services and corporate communications, at 620-874-4563 or aconine@weci.net.
