Norwich, KS–Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc. announced today that its Sharing Success Fund, managed by the Scott Community Foundation, has awarded a $1,000 grant to the Norwich Volunteer Fire Department.

The Norwich Fire Department covers 181 square miles in Kingman and Sumner Counties. In addition to providing fire protection to their home communities and mutual aid to surrounding fire districts when needed, the Norwich Fire Department emphasizes fire safety and education within their community.

This year during fire prevention week, ten volunteer fire fighters parked the department’s fire safety trailer outside Norwich Elementary School and gave students the opportunity to learn firsthand what do to in case of a fire and how to safely escape a smoke-filled room. Students also took a ride on the department’s water truck, walked a rope ladder, had the opportunity to spray a real fire hose and got to meet Ember Allender, the official Norwich Fire Dalmatian.

In addition, firefighters provided swag bags which included smoke detectors for kindergarteners, carbon monoxide detectors for first graders and batteries for kindergarteners through second grade for students’ home smoke detectors. Sharing Success grant funds awarded were used to help purchase the smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and batteries distributed through this program.

The Scott Community Foundation began formally accepting applications for grants from the Wheatland Electric Sharing Success Fund from community-based organizations on December 1, 2012.  Wheatland Electric and CoBank have each contributed $10,000 this again year to the fund. The program will continue to run until the funds are exhausted. Since 2012, the Sharing Success Fund has made $125,000 available to community-based organizations and projects across Wheatland’s service territory.
