Stay “Connected to Safety” During National Electrical Safety Month

All News

May is National Electrical Safety Month, which makes it the perfect time to make sure your home is electrically safe, secure, and efficient!

In addition to sharing safety tips on social media throughout the month, we’re here to help you thoroughly prepare for safe and efficient energy use in your home or business, too. You can do this by utilizing smart devices and home electrical safety devices, and by following some simple tips and resources thanks to the Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFI).

Because people are spending more time at home than ever before, it’s imperative they don’t overload their electrical systems and cut energy costs where they can. That’s why this month is dedicated to “Connected to Safety,” to educate members like you on the emerging technologies that ensure our homes are prepared to keep up with today’s energy demands.

Home safety devices, including arc-fault circuit interrupters, ground-fault circuit interrupters, grounded outlets, and surge protective devices, are an essential element in any smart home. These devices keep you safe from fires, electrical shock, and costly damages from power surges.

In addition, here are some quick tips to prepare your home for safe and efficient energy use:

  • Use a smart plug or power strip to turn off power when devices are not in use.

  • LED light bulbs last longer than traditional bulbs and use 25-80% less energy.

  • Heat only the area you're in with energy efficient space heaters.

  • Utilize home automation to control HVAC and lighting systems while not at home.

  • Have an electrician inspect your home's electrical system every 10 years to avoid overload.

Electrical safety awareness and education among consumers, families, and communities will prevent electrical fires, injuries, and deaths.
